The History of Hydrogen Peroxide

This compound was originally described by Louis Jacques Thenard after a reaction between nitric acid and barium peroxide. An improved version used sulphuric acid and barium sulphate instead, and was used until the middle of the 20th century.

However, before its production reached industrial levels, it was believed hydrogen peroxide was unstable as any attempts to separate it from water failed. This was due to impurities present – including transition metals – which can catalyse the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Finally, almost 100 years after its discovery, Richard Wolffenstein was able to produce pure hydrogen peroxide by vacuum distillation.

This happened 2 years after Italian physicist Giacomo Carrara was able to confirm its H2O2 molecular formula after measuring its molecular weight by freezing depression point. Up till then there were at least half a dozen possible molecular formulas for this compound consistent with all the theoretical evidence available at the time. It was not until 1934 that English physicist William Penney and Scottish physicist Gordon Sutherland described its molecular structure, which is remarkably similar to the version accepted today.

Nowadays, hydrogen peroxide is mostly available in solution, typically with 3 to 6% concentration for household uses, and up to 35% for industrial and laboratory uses. For specialised applications, pure hydrogen peroxide is also available, but these solutions require special storage areas. This is because solutions above 70% can be converted to steam and oxygen, making this a potentially quite hazardous compound.
