Chemical and Physical Properties of Ammonium Thiocyanate

With the formula NH4SCN, ammonium thiocyanate forms colourless and odourless hygroscopic crystals, which are highly corrosive to brass, copper and iron. This compound is very soluble in water, acetone and ethanol but insoluble in chloroform and ethyl acetate. It can be referred to as ammonium rhodanide or ammonium rhodanate.

This compound can be considered a weak acid, reacting with caustic soda (NAOH) or caustic potash (KOH) to generate sodium thiocyanate or potassium thiocyanate, respectively. It also reacts easily with ferric salts to produce ferric thiocyanate, with a characteristically deep-red colouration.

How Ammonium Thiocyanate is Made

Ammonium thiocyanate is usually prepared through a reaction between carbon disulfide (CS2) and ammonia (NH3), forming intermediary ammonium dithiocarbamate (NH2(=S)SNH4). Subsequently subjected to high temperatures, this intermediary is converted to ammonium thiocyanate and hydrogen sulphide (H2S).
