Uses and Manufacturing of Cyclohexanone

The most common method of manufacture involves oxidation of cyclohexane (C6H12) in the presence of cobalt as a catalyst. This reaction can be adjusted to also produce cyclohexanol and this mixture – called ketone-alcohol oil – is the basis for the production of adipic acid.

C6H12 O2 –> (CH2)5CO H2O

Alternatively, cyclohexanone can be synthesised by partial hydrogenation of phenol (C6H5OH) and similarly to the previous process, it can also be used to generate cyclohexanol.

C6H5OH 2 H2 –> (CH2)5CO

On a small laboratory scale, cyclohexanone can be synthesised via oxidation of cyclohexanol in the presence of chromium trioxide or sodium hypochlorite, but these methods are not economically viable in a large scale.

As previously mentioned, the most important application for cyclohexanone is in the production of adipic acid, an important precursor subsequently used to produce nylon by oxidation with nitric acid. In fact, about half of the world’s production is used in this method, while the remainder is used to synthesise oxime, a second precursor also in the production of nylon. In this case, oxime is converted to caprolactam using sulphuric acid as a catalyst. Small niche applications include as a solvent or in oxidation reactions.
