What is Denatured Alcohol?
Denatured alcohol, also known as methylated spirits, is a mixture of mostly ethanol with small amounts of additives that make it unpleasant tasting, nauseating and/or sometimes poisoning in order to deter consumption. Some products may also be dyed to indicate the presence of additives.
Industrially, this product is commonly used as a solvent, while household applications include its use as a fuel for alcohol burners and camping stoves.
Additives Used
There is a variety of different additives that can be added to the ethanol depending on its intended use. The most common one is methanol, which is usually added up to 10% in solution and has led to denatured alcohol often being referred to as “methylated spirits”.
Other additives may include one or a combination of denatonium; isopropyl alcohol; acetone; methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone. These additives do not alter the properties of ethanol, but rather make it undrinkable due to their toxicity.

Hazards & Safety Information
Ethanol itself can cause irritation of eyes and skin, as well as headaches, drowsiness, weakness, narcosis, and liver damage after exposure to high concentrations. It is also highly flammable and should be stored away from any ignition sources. Further toxicity depends on additives used; for example, ingestion of methanol, even in small doses, can cause blindness or even be fatal.
