How is Ethylene Glycol is Used?
Industrial Uses
Industrially, Ethylene Glycol is mainly used in the manufacture of polyester fibres and polyethylene terephthalate resins for plastic bottles. A second common application is in the natural gas industry as a dewatering agent to eliminate water vapour from natural gas. This compound is able to prevent the formation of natural gas hydrates in long pipelines transporting the gas from its source to a processing plant. Once it’s no longer needed, ethylene glycol can be removed from the gas and recycled for further use. This method requires high-quality ethylene glycol solutions (at least 95%), but lower concentrations can be used to simply decrease the temperature at which these hydrates can form.
Household Uses
In terms of household uses, ethylene glycol is also a popular coolant liquid in many types of equipment, including air conditioning, but in most cases it’s not ideal for car coolant systems. This is because it has a significantly lower specific heat capacity compared to water, which means more liquid is required to maintain the same temperature.
Ethylene glycol is also used in antifreeze formulations. This compound can prevent the formation of ice crystals because it interferes with hydrogen bonds, making it difficult for water molecules to bind. Interestingly, pure ethylene glycol freezes at -12 degree Celsius, but when dissolved in water, it can remain liquid at much lower temperatures. A 60% solution, for example, freezes at -45 degree Celsius.
