Hexane is a clear, colourless liquid alkaline primarily obtained through the refining of crude oils. At room temperature, they are liquids with a boiling point between 50and 70o Celsius. Hexane contains a mixture of hydrocarbons with six carbon atoms. It has a smell similar to that of gasoline.

The chemical formula for Hexane is C6H14.

Hexane is toxic to humans if it is inhaled and can cause neurotoxicity. Acute exposure can cause numbness, dizziness, confusion, nausea and headaches. Long term exposure can have extreme adverse effects on humans. Handle with care and only in well ventilated areas.

What is Hexane Used For?

Hexane has found uses in industry and laboratories around the world. Such uses include:

  • The formulation of glues and adhesives.
  • Extraction of grease and oil from soil and water.
  • Cleaning and degreasing in industries and labs.
  • Removal of cooking oils from seeds.
  • Use in the manufacture of textiles and fabrics

It should be noted that Hexane is frequently being replaced by n-heptane in many applications due to the high level of toxicity.
