What are the Most Common Applications of Sulphuric Acid?
This acid is a very important chemical in industry, used in multiple applications and processes. The majority is used in the manufacture of fertilisers, detergents, resins, pharmaceuticals, catalysts and insecticides, as well as minor applications, such as aluminium reduction, paper sizing and water treatment.
In addition, niche applications include printing inks, coated fabrics, pigments and enamels, as well as the production of explosives, textiles and batteries, to name just a few.
Raw Material in the Manufacture of Fertilisers
The major use for sulphuric acid is undoubtedly in the manufacture of several fertilisers. Of these, the most important is to synthesise phosphoric acid which is subsequently used to produce potassium-based fertilisers.
The process uses fluorapatite (Ca5F(PO4)3) treated with sulphuric acid, which produces hydrated calcium sulphate (CaSO4), hydrogen fluoride (HF) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4).

Another process in the manufacture of fertilisers involves synthesis between sulphuric acid and ammonia, typically derived from the thermal decomposition of coal.
